You’ve made it to Luwuk. After all that travel, you’ll probably want to relax before heading to the Banggai Islands. Luckily, there’s a new homestay with low-key, backpacker vibes and a friendly host who has all the info you need to navigate the area. In this post, I’ll cover how to reach Luwuk, where to stay, and which ferry to Banggai to choose.
Reaching Luwuk from the South
The easiest way to reach Luwuk from South Sulawesi is to fly direct from Makassar. If you’re overlanding, travel Makassar → Toraja → Poso / Tentena → Ampana → Luwuk. The roads are good, but expect long travel days.
Reaching Luwuk from the North
There are no direct flights from Manado to Luwuk. The best route is to take a bus from Manado to Gorontalo (10 hours), continue by ferry from Gorontalo to Pagimana (11 hours), then travel by car from Pagimana to Luwuk (2 hours). Rideshares are very limited in Pagimana, so it helps to contact Ika at 88 Happy Homestay in Luwuk a few days in advance. She can arrange a pickup.
The Best Homestay in Luwuk
The best place to stay in Luwuk is 88 Happy Homestay. It has an inviting outdoor seating area, clean air-conditioned rooms, and a big included breakfast. There’s also an information wall where the host, Ika, has posted phone numbers for homestays and guides in Banggai, plus updated ferry schedules. We loved spending evenings in the social area chatting with other travelers, and Ika often joined in. She’s passionate about hosting and helping visitors, and it shows! A room currently runs for about 12 USD per night.
Extend Your Visa Here
If you need to extend your visa, Luwuk is an excellent place to do it. Indonesia no longer accepts online extensions, but you can complete the process in person at the Luwuk immigration office. The office opens at 8 AM, and it’s best to arrive early because the waiting area fills up quickly. The staff are young, friendly, and very helpful. I finished everything in about 45 minutes and received my extension confirmation by email later the same day. Be sure to bring 500,000 IDR in cash, as card payments are not accepted.
What Else to Do in Luwuk
Ika at 88 Happy Homestay rents scooters for 100,000 IDR (about 6 USD) per day, which makes it easy to explore the area. Luwuk has several beautiful waterfalls, including Salodik, Piala, and Laumarang. I also enjoyed a walk along Pantai Kilo 5, not far from the city center. The water there is surprisingly clean and clear, even with the busy road nearby, and the shoreline is lined with local food stalls that make a nice lunch stop.
Traveling to the Banggai Islands
Several ferries depart from Luwuk to the Banggai islands daily:
- Luwuk to Leme Leme: Take this ferry to reach northwest Peleng Island. About 40 minutes from the ferry port, you’ll find Heppy Homestay, Paisu Pok lake, and a lagoon called Paisu Batango. The ferry leaves at 14:00 and tickets cost 54,000 IDR per person.
- Luwuk to Banggai Laut: Take this to reach Banggai Laut Island, home to KIA Homestay, Oyama Beach, and some hidden-gem snorkeling spots.
- Luwuk to Salakan: Take this ferry to the town of Salakan on Peleng Island. From Salakan, Mandel beach is about 45 minutes away.
- Luwuk to Panenteng: Take this route to reach Luk Panenteng village on Peleng Island, the access point for Danau Paisupok and nearby beaches. It leaves at 14:00 and tickets cost 60,000 IDR per person.
Verify the schedule locally or by contacting 88 Happy Homestay, as timings may change.
Getting Out and Where to Go Next
